Robert Gorman, MD

Trenton, N.J. – The New Jersey Academy of Family Physicians (NJAFP) recently announced the election of Robert Gorman, MD as president at the NJAFP’s Annual Scientific Assembly in Atlantic City.

The NJAFP, the largest primary care medical specialty society in the state, is a leader in health care reform, advancing the cause of the family physician and drafting legislation that improves the health care system statewide. As president, Dr. Gorman serves as the chief elected officer, representing the membership and the best interests of the Academy. In addition to serving as a motivating force for other officers, board members, committee members, staff and membership, Dr. Gorman will influence the establishment of goals and objectives for the organization during his term of office.

“As the incoming president, I pledge to do my best to continue to advocate for family physicians and the NJAFP,” said Dr. Gorman. “The challenges facing today’s family physicians in New Jersey – hassle factors, reimbursement undervaluation and burnout – always seem to be difficult, but it is clear to me that we will accomplish more for our patients, the citizens of New Jersey, and for our own health and well-being if we do this together, as an organization.”

Dr. Gorman joined the NJAFP in 1985 and became a member of the Board of Directors in 2010. Board certified in family medicine, he co-founded Vanguard Medical Group in Verona, N.J., where he has been actively practicing family medicine for 30 years. Currently, Dr. Gorman serves as chairman of the department of family medicine and member of the medical executive committee at Hackensack UMC Mountainside Hospital. Additionally, he is an assistant clinical professor of family medicine at Rutgers-New Jersey Medical School.

Dr. Gorman earned his medical degree from Rutgers-New Jersey Medical School and completed a residency in family medicine at Mountainside Hospital in Montclair. He has been a fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians since 1992 and has been honored repeatedly as a Top Doctor by Castle Connolly, New Jersey Monthly and New York Magazine.
