Joan N. Medina, MD Named Resident of the Year by New Jersey Academy of Family Physicians

Trenton, NJ – The New Jersey Academy of Family Physicians (NJAFP) recently recognized Joan N. Medina, MD, of Freehold, as the 2015 New Jersey Family Medicine Resident of the Year at the NJAFP’s Annual Scientific Assembly held in Atlantic City.

Each year, this award is presented to one outstanding medical resident in the state who best exemplifies the tradition of the family practice resident by working effectively as a team physician, showing support to co-residents, being respected by peers and educators, and demonstrating leadership.

Dr. Medina recently completed her family medicine residency at CentraState Medical Center in Freehold where she served as co-chief resident. Upon graduation, Dr. Medina intends to practice family medicine locally.

While at CentraState, Dr. Medina took an active leadership role, serving on the medical executive, quality improvement and wound care committees. Even more than that, she advocated for residents as an active member of the committee of interns and residents service employees international union.

Nominators say Dr. Medina demonstrated excellence in her performance as a resident physician and became well-respected by faculty, staff, peers and patients. Her aptitude for leadership, no nonsense approach and professional demeanor helped her mentor and guide her interns to success. She utilized her great aptitude for teaching to ensure that her interns were consistently meeting expectations.

A graduate of the Ross University School of Medicine in Dominica, Dr. Medina attended the State University of New York in Stony Brook, where she received a bachelor of science.
