Bhavika Patel, MD, Receives 2017 Michael J. Doyle, MD, FAAFP, Receives New Jersey Family Medicine Resident of the Year Award

Trenton, NJ – The New Jersey Academy of Family Physicians (NJAFP) recently recognized Bhavika Patel, MD, with the Michael J. Doyle, MD, FAAFP New Jersey Family Medicine Resident of the Year Award at the Annual Scientific Assembly held in Atlantic City.

Named in honor of the late Michael Doyle, MD, a prominent family physician and past NJAFP president who was active advocate for family medicine on state and national levels, the award is presented to one outstanding medical resident in the state who best exemplifies the tradition of the family practice resident by working effectively as a team physician, showing support to co-residents, being respected by peers and educators, and demonstrating leadership.

As a resident physician, Dr. Patel took an active leadership role within the Virtua Family Medicine Residency program at Virtua in Voorhees. She served the community by planning and organizing a health fair for underserved populations, led educational programs for children and created handouts for Virtua Medical Group offices to provide health education for patients.

As a result of Dr. Patel’s excellence in professionalism, patient care, communication, teaching and leadership, she was awarded the Faculty for Tomorrow Scholarship from the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine. She has presented in front of the Society of Teachers in Family Medicine in San Diego and the Women’s Health Congress in Washington, D.C., and has been invited to make oral presentations on various topics numerous times for Virtua.

Dr. Patel demonstrates excellence in her performance as a family resident physician and has a life-long commitment to serving the families of New Jersey. It is one of her primary goals as a Family Medicine faculty member to form strong and supportive relationships with residents so that all students can learn and flourish.

Dr. Patel earned her medical degree from American University of Antigua in St. Johns, Antigua and her bachelor’s degree from University of Delaware.
