The Many Facets of Chronic Pain

Course description

Many patients who experience persistent pain will visit their primary care clinician for treatment. This monograph is designed to improve patient outcomes by increasing primary care clinicians’knowledge, comprehension, and performance in the management of chronic pain. To help clinicians understand issues related to pain management, this publication will review current literature and guidelines and provide recommendations for using pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic modalities to develop successful personalized management plans for patients who report chronic pain.

Target audience: 

Family physicians and other primary care clinicians who treat patients with chronic non-cancer pain.

Learning objectives: 

At the end of this program, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the US FDA’s Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) and its impact on patient care
  2. Construct individualized pain management plans based on current evidence and guidelines
  3. Choose appropriate pharmacologic and/or non-pharmacologic therapy for pain management based on patient characteristics 
  4. ​Engage patients in conversation about their pain 
  5. Use shared decision-making to develop individualized pain management plans
